Opening Kick

Opening Kick is a segment devoted to bringing you all Eagles and U.S.A. Rugby news in one location.

Make sure to participate in our photo caption contest to enter to win a Lions 125th Anniversary Ball.

National Teams:

U.S.A. Rugby has released the Eagles roster for Saturday. The back-row of Samu Manoa, Scott LaValla, and Todd Clever looks killer while Taku Ngwenya and Chris Wyles return to the team. Chris Biller and Mike Petri are healthy and starting. Seamus Kelly will get his first start.

Ireland have also named their starting lineup and it includes quite a few younger players.

We spoke with Eagles head coach Mike Tolkin to get his thoughts on the heat, integrating overseas players, and the decision to start Kelly.

Tolkin was also busy yesterday stopping by the local sports station in Houston alongside Kelly to talk Ireland (video). He also spoke to the Guardian saying the team's aim is to win.

Adopted Texan Taku Ngwenya was the subject of this terrific article in the Houston Chronicle.

The match will also have a bit of an extra Irish-flavor as both Liam Murphy and John Quill grew up in Ireland. Each was the subject of a different profile. (Murphy in the Independent and Quill in the Irish Times) Quill is on the reserves bench for the match.

Take the jump to read more.

Pat Clifton spoke to a few of the newer Eagles on the team to get their thoughts ahead of Saturday. (Membership required) He also says the team won't be holding back in attack.

The Women Eagles begin their summer series against France today. We previewed the match earlier on the site.

Jonathan Swart at U.S.A. Rugby notes the contrast between the French and U.S. rosters while Jackie Finlan looks the expectations for the match. (Membership required)

In case you missed it, here are the highlights (or lowlights) or the Junior All-Americans loss to South Africa.

Great news for rugby fans, Universal Sports will air a six part series profiling the Eagles and the men's and women's 7's teams.

Hopefully not lost in the excitement of USA-Ireland, Rugby Wrap Up caught up with Alex Magleby to talk about his reasons for resigning.

Club/College:

James Walker has stepped down as coach at Belmont Shore in order to focus on Tiger Rugby.

Ted Hardy reports that the ACRL's shift to a fall season has caused Navy to withdraw from the main competition but remain an associate member.

Jack Clark was on the radio talking all things Cal and college rugby. You can listen to a replay on the interview by clicking on the link on this site.

Brown women's coach Kerri Heffernan has also resigned from her position. She spoke with Allyn Freeman about the decision to step down. (Membership required)

The Northwest Collegiate Rugby Conference has named their first and second all-NCRC teams.

World:

Cian Healy has been cleared of biting charges but has still be sent home with ligament damage.

Any chance of Jonny Wilkinson playing for the Lions appears to be out after he had surgery on his groin.

The Brumbies win over the Rebels this morning has guaranteed them a place in the playoffs.

Gordon Tietjens is confident his team can win the World Cup. He announced his final squad yesterday.

Lyn Jones is leaving as London Welsh and will take up a role with the Dragons.

Samoa have added new sponsors for both their 7's and 15's teams.
