Opening Kick

Opening Kick is a segment devoted to bringing you all Eagles and U.S.A. Rugby news in one location.

National Teams:

It was not a good start for the Eagles in their World Cup qualifying campaign as they were dominated by Canada 27-9. A try from Phil Mack less than a minute into the match set the tone for what would be a disappointing day for the Eagles. You can check out the highlights from the match here.

With such a disappointing performance only a few of the Eagles received decent ratings in our player rating.

Head coach Mike Tolkin and leader Chris Wyles were disappointed with the result.

Alex Goff looks at the lack of offensive from the Eagles, specifically in relation to box kicks.

The one piece of good news for the Eagles, if you want to look at is this way, is that they didn't slip in the IRB Rankings.

Congrats to Titi Lamositele who becomes the youngest Eagle of all time. The cap could also clear the way for a professional contract in England.

Shalom Suniula says that new Eagles 7's coach Matt Hawkins will need help adjusting to the role. (Membership required)

Club/College:

The All-Americans were the dominant team over the weekend at the Serevi RugbyTown Sevens and justly took home the Cup. Led by Madison Hughes the team went 6-0 and picked up some big wins along the way, including over Tiger Rugby.

The New York City 7's also had a successful weekend. Despite a depleted roster to start the tournament the team took home the Plate in impressive fashion. SFGG took eighth place at the tournament.

World:

The All Blacks enjoyed a good time in Sydney as they won the first Bledisloe Cup match. South Africa enjoyed a record win over Argentina.

The All Blacks have called up four players as injury cover for this weekend's match.

The head of the Premiership says that a deal with the Heineken Cup is still a long ways off.

In player movement, Michael Hooper as signed a new three-year deal with the Waratahsnwhile Louresn Adriaanse has joined the Sharks.

Japan have unsurprisingly booked their place in next year's Junior World Rugby Trophy.
