Round 2 of the 2013 Southwest Collegiate Rugby Conference (SWC) Fall 7s Series goes forward this Saturday, September 14. As last weekend, this round takes place at two different venues. The North stop of this round takes place in Fort Worth, TX and the South stop is in Houston, TX.
The Rice Owls host the South stop this week with the Texas Longhorns trading stops with Texas State, to be joined by Lamar and the University of Houston. Texas State rolls north to be hosted this week by TCU. The Horned Frogs will be joined again by UNT and SFA. Texas State and UNT are sitting at the top of the rankings with 13 series points each.
While we reported a three-way tie for first earlier in the week, some teams thought the results should have been different and the SWC re-calculated the results. Take the jump to see the amended rankings.
In the North, look for TCU to play the spoiler on their home turf. Horned Frogs victorues, close or not, over Texas St. and UNT would stir the pot aplenty. But Texas St and UNT have proven that they are tough competitors in 7s and have employed the necessary coaching to continue in that vein. This is a great situation for the Longhorns. A veritable pool of death in the North could set up a situation that puts Texas in the driver's seat. Prediction: TCU, UNT, and Texas St end up 2-1 each this weekend.
Texas heads to Houston to compete against Rice, Lamar and a feisty UH. The Cougars were not able to take their full compliment of players to Beaumont last week. They played okay, but not up to the standard of 7s that they played last year. They should not have that problem when just traveling across town. But, while Houston may present a stronger squad, so should Texas. With another week to get the paperwork straightened out, Texas should go 3-0 in Houston with a full squad.
