The Rugby Alumni of Sam Houston are elated to announce that current Sam Houston State RFC President Marcos Garcia has been awarded the Omar Sanchez Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship award is for $1000 and covers expenses during the fall and spring semester.
Marcos, who hails from Alvin, Texas, is a Criminal Justice major who plans to enter the United States Navy as an officer upon graduation. Marcos’ long term goal is to become a member of the US Secret Service. “It is a great honor to be awarded this scholarship. It is my sincerest hope to demonstrate my appreciation to our alumni and respect for Mr. Sanchez’s memory through my hard work and dedication” stated Garcia.
The Sanchez scholarship is awarded in loving memory of Omar Sanchez. Omar was devoted to Sam Houston State RFC and to his teammates. He gave his all in both rugby and his academic life, working hard to better himself and to succeed at both. “Our hope is to keep Chavez’s (Omar’s nickname) memory alive and well at Sam Houston while also providing a deserving player with the assistance he needs to do exactly what Omar was doing when he passed, chasing his dream.” Just as Omar impacted people while at Sam Houston, this scholarship will impact people now and well into the future.
