DI-A, College 7’s Nationals to Air on ESPN

U.S.A. Rugby announced earlier today that they have reached an agreement with ESPN to televise the May 18th DI-A final and November’s College 7’s Nationals on ESPNU. The competitions will also be available online on ESPN3. The competitions represent the top two collegiate competitions put on by U.S.A. Rugby. The DI-A final has been televised by ESPN3 over the last few years while the 7’s Nationals were television partially on ESPN3 last year.

The move represents a big coup for U.S.A. Rugby in that it’s managed to get ESPN on board despite the loss of Cal and BYU to the Varsity Cup. Having the stability of both tournaments on television should also provide stability to the competition, especially the 7’s tournament which had been subject to pull outs in years past.

The DI-A quarterfinals take place this weekend. St. Mary’s is favored to emerge from the West while it’s a toss-up in the East between Arkansas State, Life, and Army.

  1. I think we now know which competition will deliver the 2013 Men's National Champion. As the saying goes, "History is written by the victors", and USA Rugby beat the Varsity Cup organizers. In the Athletic Department halls of BYU and Cal the collegiate sports God of broadcast TV on ESPN speaks volumes, and regardless of which one of these 2 teams lift the Varsity Cup on a webstream or BYUtv it will pale in comparison. I predict that this is the last year we hear about the Varsity Cup as an alternative to USA Rugby's national competition.
