Opening Kick

Opening Kick is a segment devoted to bringing you all Eagles and U.S.A. Rugby news in one location.

Eagles:

The Eagles face a difficult draw in the 7's World Cup, but if you look at the recent history between the Eagles and their opponents things may not be that bleak (but still very difficult).

Nigel Melville was on Fox News recently and covered a number of topics surrounding rugby in the United States.

College:

Our own Ted Hardy provide yet another installment of his weekly ACRL Breakdown yesterday. Check it out.

BYU head coach David Smyth and captain Ryan Roundy spoke ahead of the team's home opener against Utah State. BYU also announced a new partnership to broadcast all of their home matches live.

Speaking of broadcasting matches, yesterday we noted that with difficulty of getting college rugby on television many schools are finding alternative ways of getting their matches out there for fans.

The biggest match of the weekend in terms of college is undoubtably Davenport vs. Life.

Penn State will be in California this weekend to take on St. Mary's before playing Cal next week while Arizona will travel to Utah.

Club:

Pat Clifton has a good season preview of the Glendale Raptors, including information on additions Shaun Davies, James Aldridge, and Brett Willis. (Membership required)

The Raptors have also been active in their community. They recently visited a Children's Hospital.

The Provo Steelers are looking to turn heads in the West's North division this season.

Women:

Jackie Finlan has a great look at the resurgence of the Sacramento Amazaons.

The Civil War will take place this weekend as Oregon State and Oregon face off while undefeated Humboldt State and UC Santa Cruz also go head to head.

Youth:

The Orange County Register has a great look at Mitchel Gusman, one of the High School All-Americans that will be traveling to the Rosslyn Park 7's.

World:

The Blues are definitely off to a better start this season than last. They have made it two wins in a row after they smashed the Crusaders. The team could also receive another boost as Anthony Boric is back on the field.

In the other Super Rugby match, the Waratahs beat the Rebels 31-26 in Sydney.

George Smith recently returned to the Brumbies and says he can't wait to get a crack at the Lions.

Wales could be without Gethin Jenkins next weekend as he continues to struggle with a calf injury.

The same goes for Jonathan Sexton who is only 50/50 to play France next weekend.

Turning to 7's, Scotland coach Phil Greening has left the team and has been replaced with Stehen Gemmell while Collins Injera remains suspended from the Kenyan national team.

Sometimes it's just hard to say goodbye. Shane Williams has signed on for another season of rugby in Japan (don't be surprised if you see him as part of the U.S. All Star team that will take on the Lions).

In player signings, Cardiff have re-signed five players, including Rhys Patchell, Tom Smallbone has re-upped with London Irish, and Neil Briggs and Jamie Gibson will move to Leicester beginning next season.

Here is a cool story. Bath flanker Mat Gilbert isn't letting the fact that he is deaf stop him from excelling on the rugby pitch.
