Club 7's Nationals Day 1 Recap

Go here to watch the matches live.

Men Round 1

Most matches went according to plan during the first round at the Club 7's Nationals. Most of the favorites, including Belmont Shore and Seattle-OPSB, cruised to easy victories over their opponents. However, there were a few matches that went against what was expected. Atlanta Old White shocked San Diego Old Aztec early with a 15-5 win. Old White went up 15-0 at halftime before Old Aztecs scored a late try. It wasn't a shock that Schuylkill River beat OMBAC but the 28-5 scoreline was surprising. Schuylkill River dominated possession and put OMBAC in a huge hole. Other first round winners include Chicago 12-5 over Denver, Middlesex 19-12 over WE Rugby, Old Blue 24-14 over SFGG, and 1823 12-7 over NOLA.

The Chicago Lions stayed perfect with a win over Schuylkill River at the death. The Barbarians took the second spot in the pool. Day Two Look Ahead

Tomorrow's cup quarterfinals kick off with a tough and feisty Belmont Shore facing the clinical Denver Barbarians. Afterward, the big men of Old Blue resurrect their rivalry with the dark horse Savages of Middlesex. The third match will see another pair of teams very familiar with one another, San Francisco-Golden Gate and Seattle-OPSB, and promises to be a must-see barn-burner. Rounding out the cup quarterfinals, a team that has not lost a tournament all summer, the Chicago Lions, goes against a team that was not picked by anyone to fight for the cup, Atlanta Old White.

The bowl quarterfinals sees a decades-old rivalry taking place in Pittsburgh between the San Diego Old Aztecs and Old Mission Beach Athletic Club. The upstart teams contend against each other in the second match as 1823 (Columbus) and WE Rugby take the pitch in a battle of the fittest. The third match between NOVA and New Orleans Royale has all the makings of a real go-to-ground battle. Finally, at the only place these two may ever meet, the Schuylkill River Exiles take the pitch against the Titans of Hawaii.

Even though Boston blanked them in round 3, San Diego won their pool and eked through (pay 8 points) to the first match of the cup quarterfinals to face the Chicago Lions. The second match sees perennial powerhouse NOVA up against the Youngbloodz. The third cup QF is between the DC Furies and the Atlanta Harlequins. Finally, the engine-room that is the Berkeley All-Blues face their northern neighbors, the Oregon Sports Union.

The first match of the bowl quarterfinals matches Philadelphia against the Combined Services team. Next in the bowl QFs, the Seattle Breakers face NOVA 2 followed by Beantown against Detroit. The final match of the bowl QFs pits the Scion Sirens and the Boston Belles against each other.

  1. Just a correction to the first round Middlesex game (vs. WE Rugby, Round 1, Game 5) ... 2nd try was by V. Daley, not J. Collinson)

  2. On latest story you have the scores for the Plate Final reversed. Belmont should be 12 and SFGG 10.
