Seattle-OPSB Take Pacific Coast Title

It wasn't easy and it took a come from behind effort, but Seattle-OPSB managed to take the Pacific Coast title with a victory over San Francisco Golden Gate in the final. Both Seattle-OPSB and SFGG expectedly made the final after going 3-0 in pool play and semi-final victories. The win gives Seattle-OPSB the top seed heading into nationals while SFGG will also join them.

The final began with a scare for the home team. Ben Gollings, who as fantastic all day, went down with an injury straight off the opening kick. The extend of the injury is unknown at the moment but Gollings did not look good as he left the field. Sensing that Seattle-OPSB was reeling from the injury SFGG went on the attack. Danny Barrett, who has really come into his own this 7's season, made a nice run and offload to Tim Maupin, who got SFGG on the board first. Mose Timoteo's conversion was no good putting the score at 5-0.

But Seattle-OPSB rallied. Utilizing some strong defense Seattle-OPSB absorbed SFGG's pressure and when they created a turnover it allowed Emosi Vucago to break through the defense and run the length of the field for a try. Miles Craigwell then put his team up at the half with a breakthrough of his own. At halftime Seattle-OPSB led 14-5.

Still, SFGG showed plenty of resiliency and class. More consistent possession eventually forced Seattle-OPSB to crack. Kellen Gordon earned time in the bin for persistent infringement. That allowed SFGG to pick up a couple of tries to take the lead. With a squad full of veterans, SFGG did a good job of taking advantage of Seattle-OPSB's mistakes and turning them into scores.

Seattle-OPSB eventually settled down and once they had Gordon back on the pitch they were able to swing the momentum back in their favor. Simi Ratukalou, who came in as Golling's replacement, was masterful in guiding his team to the right spots. If he wasn't breaking through the line himself he was finding teammates. Ratukalou as also instrumental earning the try that put his team back in the match. With a great chip and recovery Ratukalou was able to get behind the defense where a nice offload set up Tim Stanfill for the try.

Needing one more try Seattle-OPSB kept up the pressure and eventually found captain Mike Palefau for the winning score. It was their most difficult match of the day but one the team needed to get ready for nationals.

For SFGG it was a disappointing end to the day but overall it wasn't the best day for the club. They had no trouble advancing through pool play with big wins over Valley, Sacramento, and Eastside, but they had a very difficult semi-final against Olympic Club and only emerged 15-14 winners. Riding Eagle Colin Hawley Olympic Club looked strong in their semi-final and even ran out to a 14-10 lead late in the game. But SFGG scored at the end to avoid a repeat of last season.

Seattle-OPSB had no trouble with their semi-final opponent Sacramento. Overall the team scored more than 100 points on the day and were only scored on by SFGG and Sacramento.

On the women's side of the bracket the Berkeley All Blues emerged as champions after they defeated the Seattle Breakers 31-5 in the final. Berkeley were particularly strong on defense and limited any chance for the Breakers to score. The Breakers only got on the board in the dying moments of the match. Both teams will compete at nationals, as will ORSU who defeated the Seattle Mudhens in the third place match.
