Update: Rugby Players in the NFL & College Football

Johnson Bademosi

As American football enters postseason play for college and the run-up to the playoffs for the NFL, it’s time once again to check in on former rugby players (NOTE: we only check in on those that played for a national team or saw significant time in college.
We begin with Hayden Smith. Shortly before our last update we Smith made the jump from being on the practice team to making the 53-man roster. That is quite an accomplishment for someone who had never played an organized game in his life. Since then he has appeared in two games without registering any stats. It’s a learning year for Smith but seeing as he has made so much progress this year, it wouldn’t be out of the question to see him return. The Jets are 6-7 with three games remaining in the regular season. The playoffs are still a possibility.

Take the jump to read more.

Of all the former rugby players on our list, Nate Ebner has had the most success so far this season. The New England Patriot has played in all 13 of his team’s games, registering 11 total tackles. Originally seen as only a special teams player, he has stepped up and played decent minutes on the defense. New England have locked up the AFC East and are currently sitting in a second seed for the playoffs. Ebner continues to improve every game and has become a fan favorite. Head coach Bill Belichik loves the way he plays and it’s likely he remains with the team next season.

Johnson Bademosi has also made the most of his opportunity. Despite being an undrafted rookie Bademosi has earned the respect of his teammates and was even named as the fourth captain a few weeks back. Injuries to the Browns secondary has meant that Bademosi has seen more time on the field. Typically he has just been playing special teams. Bademosi was looked at as the most likely to return to rugby, but after his strong play, that now seems less likely. The Browns still have a chance at the playoffs but it’s slim.

The season is over for Thretton Palamo and the University of Utah. Things didn’t work out the way they would have liked for either party as Palamo played in nine of the team’s contests only registering five tackles. It appears that his move from offense to defense hasn’t paid off as much as he and the coaching staff would have liked. The Utes similarly had a disappointing season and finished the season 5-7. That means they were not bowl eligible. With a new recruiting class coming in and Palamo’s inability to shine, it could be the end of his time with the Utes. He has one season remaining. It will be interesting to see whether he returns to the rugby pitch this spring, but much of that may also depend on whether Utah can sort out the current problems in its rugby program.

Paul Lasike has impressed in his first year playing American football for BYU. He’s played in 11 of his team’s 12 matches, rushing for 129 yards and two touchdowns. He also has one reception for 25 yards. He is still learning and with good options ahead of him, it might be awhile before he can become a full-time starter. The Cougars will play in the Poinsettia Bowl on the 20th.

  1. I know this is focused on guys who played on a national team or in college but here are a few more guys currently in college football with rugby experience:

Morgan Breslin - DE - USC: not much on him playing rugby other than breaking his foot and missing part of a high school football season as a result. Big time athlete, though.

Psalm Wooching - FB - Washington: Another big time athlete. Didn't play defense in high school but to show colleges he could tackle, he sent them his rugby highlights. Here are some of them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gm-03pBm1KQ

Deforest Buckner - DE - Oregon: grew up playing rugby in NZ

Alex Elkins - LB - Oklahoma St: had no football experience prior to college. Played rugby in high school and graduates from OSU this year.

Joey Iosefa - RB - Hawaii

Also, Stanford DE Luke Kaumatule is Samu Manoa's brother. Not sure if he has any formal rugby experience or not.

I hope USA Rugby is tracking these guys and any others like them. They are great athletes who have actually grown up playing rugby and will be much more likely to be successful than other crossovers with no prior rugby experience.

    1. Me too. There should be some upcoming changes to the 7's program that will make it easier for these players to ease their way back into rugby.

  2. Curtis,

Can you elaborate on the Utah situation at all? That's the first I had heard of that.

    1. I heard thru the 7s grapevine that someone beat up a trainer on a team trip and they were booted off campus which doesnt surprise me

    2. The University of Utah Rugby Club is no longer sanctioned as a sports club by their representative university (http://campusrec.utah.edu/programs/sports-clubs/), thus they are not eligible to compete in USA Rugby sanctioned collegiate events (such as a 7s qualifier for the College 7s National Championship). So, write-off the Utes as a possible for a few years.

  3. I believe... last I heard, Utah was struggling to secure a conference to play in.

Sad to hear Thretton has basically wasted a year playing football when he could have been improving his rugby that much more. Happy though, to hear he might be returning to his true sport, rugby. USA Rugby should be chasing Thretton like crazy to give him a sevens contract the minute he's done with college.

  4. Thanks for following these players. I have been thinking about putting together a list of NCAA and NFL players with rugby backgrounds. Then contacting those players for testimonials about how rugby improved their football. Then compiling all of the testimonials into a booklet/PDF to give to rugby coaches. Then the coaches can share the booklet with school administrators that they approach to start new middle school and high school programs.

  5. Great idea Rugby America!

I can barely remember that far back but we didn't even have soccer in high school in the spring. All the football players were "encouraged" to run track and field. Skill players ran, fat guys threw stuff! I was a "tweener" so I threw the javelin! Then I went to college and found rugby, my sport for the next 30 years...

  6. Here are some others with rugby/football connections:

John Cullen, who was an all-conference OT at Utah, has joined the rugby team and looks very good
Francis Bernard, Herriman HS rugby star, has just committed to play football at BYU
Max Moala, former representative player from Highland Rugby, just wrapped us his career at Utah as a part time starter at fullback (scored 1 TD this year I believe)

BTW, I would not say that Thretton has wasted his time with football, he is getting his school paid for by doing it! This is going to keep happening until colleges can give rugby scholarships

  7. I believe Kona Schwenke, a 2nd string DT/NG for the #1 Notre Dame Fighting Irish played rugby in high school in his native Hawaii
