Wyles Joins Elite Company

Chris Wyles scoring a try on his 100th appearance for Saracens was a nice moment. Wyles has had to work hard over his career and at one point making that many appearances for any club seemed like a challenge. It's easy to forget that Wyles started his career with Nottingham and Northampton, but it was really his play with the Eagles and with the 7's team that really made him standout. In fact, joined Saracens on a secondment from U.S.A. Rugby. To get 100 appearances for the Saracens is a compliment to Wyles' drive and determination. He deserves full credit for everything he has done.

His 100th appearance had us thinking, how many other Eagles have made 100 appearances for their clubs? Take the jump to find out.
Not surprisingly, Wyles has joined a pretty exclusive list of Americans. Only three other Eagles have earned over 100 appearances for a single team in their career. Taku Ngwenya leads the list with 148 (and counting) appearances for Biarritz and is the only other active player with the same team. Mike MacDonald had 126 appearances for Leeds before being let go at the end of last year. Some of those appearances came in the RFU Championship and in the Premiership. The last member of the list is Dan Lyle with 125 matches for Bath.

Beyond these four players, it's a pretty far drop to find the next player. Silesi Sika played 52 matches for Beziers. Shawn Pittman played 42 for London Welsh while Luke Gross played 39 for Newcastle. Todd Clever had 32 for the Lions. Among the active players, Hanno Dirksen has 41, Samu Manoa has 36, and Scott LaValla has 23.

^As was pointed out to me be a wise reader, LaValla most likely has well over a hundred appearances for Trinity.

I know I'm probably missing some from this list, so if you want to add to it in the comments, go ahead.

  1. I guess it depends on where you draw the line. You aren't just including capped Eagles if you have Hanno Dirksen, so does that mean you're including any player that is still eligible or anyone with U.S. ties? American-born Alex Corbisiero has played 56 matches with the London Irish, but plays internationally with England.

  2. Our policy has been to include anyone as an "Eagle Abroad" if they are still eligible to play for the U.S. So in Dirksen's case, even though he has said he wants to play for Wales, we still count him. As soon as he plays for another team, we take him off the list. That is why Corbisiero or Ronan O'Gara are not on the list.

  3. Tommy Seymour has 23 caps with Glasgow.
