MLR Standings & Analysis: One Playoff Spot Remains

Three of the seven teams have finished their regular season schedule and now with one week left we know some things for certain. First and foremost Glendale will finish with the best record in the competition thanks to their win over Seattle last Saturday. The Raptors still have a game to play (against San Diego) while Seattle are done for the regular season. Glendale currently have 34 points while Seattle have 29 points. Seattle can't be caught in the standings so they'll be the second seed in the playoffs. That keeps Seattle and Glendale on a collision course in the finals.

Another team that will be in the playoffs is San Diego. They beat Austin over the weekend. Although they still have a match remaining but with 20 points they can't fall behind Austin who have 18 points and have played their full schedule. The question for San Diego is whether they will be the third seed or the fourth seed. Having to face Glendale will certainly be tough.

Utah had a chance to book a spot in the playoffs had they been able to beat NOLA but in a high scoring game they lost by only a few points. They absolutely can make the playoffs with a match against lowly Houston left and even if they lose that match but secure two bonus points that will put them ahead of Austin.

The two teams eliminated from the playoffs at this point are Houston, who were eliminated awhile back, and NOLA. Houston have a game remaining while NOLA have finished their season. If Austin misses the playoffs, something that looks likely given that Utah play Houston in Salt Lake, that means all teams from the Texas-Louisiana area will have missed the playoffs.

One last note, only Seattle and Glendale are guaranteed to finish with winning records. San Diego still can but they'll need to beat Glendale to do it. You could point to the fact that it means parity among anybody not named Seattle or Glendale or you could take the view that the league was heavily tilted with Seattle and Glendale clearly being better than the others while everyone else was several steps behind.
