Women Eagles To Take On Ireland

Press Release

The U.S. Women's National Team (XVs) will play one of three road fixtures during their 2018 November Test series against Ireland at Energia Park on Nov. 18, USA Rugby announced today. Following their home match against the world-renowned New Zealand Black Ferns at Soldier Field on Nov. 3, part of The Rugby Weekend, as well as another test in Europe and an "A" level game to be announced later, the Women's Eagles will complete their Fall tour in Dublin.

With the recent appointment of new full-time Head Coach Rob Cain and the announcement of a comprehensive November schedule, the entire division of USA Rugby's High Performance sets another critical benchmark in the new era of the women's program.

"The Fall test series is a significant step in our vision to develop three test windows annually for our Women's Eagles. This series will be a considerable challenge, commencing with a home test against the best in the world and finishing with a formidable Irish side in their backyard," says Emilie Bydwell, General Manager for Women's High Performance.

USA Rugby's General Manager for National Teams and Performance, Alex Magleby, also made note of the organization's collaborative effort, expressing enthusiasm for the bright future of the women's program.

"Our aim has been to build a consistent and sustainable Eagles competition schedule. Locking in the fall test series for the quadrennial has been a work-in-progress for some time, and it is exciting to get this building block secured," says Magleby. "We look forward to announcing the rest of the schedule set to give our players multiple opportunities to perform under the rigors of international competition."

Having only met three times in the past two decades, the Americans own two wins over eighth-ranked Ireland (1994 and 2006) with their only loss at the 2014 Women's Rugby World Cup in France. The upcoming contest will be the first time both teams have met in more than four years, renewing a budding rivalry that promotes competitive development for both squads.

Currently ranked fifth in the world, the Women's Eagles last stunned audiences by advancing to the Bronze Final at the 2017 Women's Rugby World Cup. After going 2-1 in pool play, the Women's National Team fell to New Zealand (45-12) in the Semifinals as well as France (31-23) in the Bronze Final to finish fourth.

"Our expectation is for both team and management to show tremendous growth in accordance with our key performance indicators throughout this upcoming tour, providing us with a measuring stick to evaluate where we are and where we need to be to by 2021," says General Manager Bydwell.

Match time and broadcast information for the U.S. Women's National Team's test match with Ireland will be confirmed closer to date, along with the announcement of the opponent for the test and "A" level fixture which precede the battle in Dublin.
