Cal, Life Into DI-A Final

Photo: Connie Hatfield
Varsity Cup or DI-A it doesn't seem to matter much to Cal as they are yet into another final where they will play Life, who themselves are not unfamiliar with playing in championship matches. Cal beat Lindenwood 43-22 while Life beat Penn State 69-14. The last time either team wasn't involved in a final was in 2012 when BYU played Arkansas State in the College Premier Division.

The most anticipated semi-final was Cal and Lindenwood clashing in St. Mary's. Cal had originally been tapped to head to play Life but due to television arrangements already being set for Moraga Cal made the trip within the Bay Area and Lindenwood made the already planned trip to California. Despite that repeat travel by Lindenwood it didn't seem to impact the Lions early as they ran out to a Alex Augspurg try to go up 7-0 with then minutes gone.

Still, it would be Cal that took over the game with a 24-0 run. First it was Elliot Webb with a penalty followed by tries from Justin Dunn, Keanu Andrade, and Sam Cusano to give Cal a 24-7 lead. Lindenwood did fight back before the end of the half as Jack Hucketepp scored to make the Cal lead ten at the break.

The match narrowed at the start of the second half as Life score on a Nick Feakes penalty but when Kevin Sullivan scored Cal had a comfortable margin to ride out the match. Deion Mikesell scored for Lindenwood while Dunn and Cusano would add another try each.

For their part Life had no trouble with Penn State as they cruised to the easy win. Brian Muntanga had four first half tries for the Running Eagles.

Now the two teams will move on the final at Stevens Stadium on the campus on Santa Clara University next Friday.
