Who Will Start For The Eagles Against Chile?

Photo: Connie Hatfield

After making only one forced change to his team last week this week Gary Gold is going to have to make changes this week. It's not exactly clear who has gone back to their European teams but it's safe to assume that players like Blaine Scully, Titi Lamositele, Dino Waldren, Nick Civetta, and Will Hooley have gone back to their clubs. There might be an exception but that was the vibe we got last week in Sacramento. With all of that in mind we offer our predictions on who we think will start against Chile on Saturday.

Prop: Angus MacLellan, Huluholo Moungaloa; Tony Purpra, Paddy Ryan

With starters last week Titi Lamositele and Dino Waldren presumably not available this week (again, maybe they will be) it's going to open up some time for other players. Angus MacLellan and Huluholo Moungaloa were the go-to players last week. We expect both of them to get the start this week. We think Tony Purpura and Paddy Ryan back them up.

Hooker: James Hilterbrand; Peter Malcom

Even if he wasn't hurt it was very likely that Joe Taufete'e would not be around this week. James Hilterbrand backed up him in the first two matches so we expect that he'll move up to the starting role. That means it should come down to Peter Malcolm and Dylan Fawsitt to back up him. We think it's Malcolm with Fawsitt getting a chance later in the tournament. At the same time, it could be that Malcolm is only around for the last two weeks with Fawsitt being the back-up this week.

Lock: Nate Brakeley, Brendan Daly

Nick Civetta should be back with Newcastle/Doncaster and Matt Jensen isn't available until the last two weeks of the tour. That means that unless a player like Ben Landry slides down into the locks that Nate Brakeley and Brendan Daly will get a chance.

Back-row: Tony Lamborn, Hanco Germishuys, Cam Dolan; Aladdin Schirmer

We're not anticipating any changes in the back-row. Tony Lamborn, Hanco Germishuys, and Cam Dolan are all in camp still. If it's not broken, don't fix it. However, with Andrew Durutalo away that opens up a spot on the bench alongside Ben Landry. We think it's Aladdin Schirmer that gets the chance.

Scrumhalf: Shaun Davies; Devereaux Ferris

This is the week we think someone other than Nate Augspurger starts at flyhalf. That's mostly because we think he moves out to the wing which opens up a spot for Shaun Davies to start and Devereaux Ferris to be the back-up.

Flyhalf: Will Magie; Ben Cima

Will Magie has started the last two weeks and will once again, especially with Will Hooley back in England. Ben Cima is an outside chance but we think he is on the bench.

Center: Dylan Audsley, Bryce Campbell

We think that Dylan Audsley and Bryce Campbell get a shot in the centers once again. Given the other options they make the most sense.

Wing: Nate Augspurger, Ryan Matyas; Josh Whippy

As we mentioned earlier we think Augspurger slides down to play on the wing alongside Ryan Matyas. We think we think that the versatility of Josh Whippy has him on the bench.

Fullback: Mike Te'o

Te'o has played pretty well so far in the ARC and he should get another chance.
