No Surprises In College Fall Classic Round One

Photo: Connie Hatfield

Arizona, Cal Poly, Central Washington, and San Diego State all picked up victories in the first round of the Fall Classic. The tournament features a double-elimination format which means all the winners will face off in the next round while the teams that lost will have one last shot at advancing.

Stanford against Arizona started things off and although Stanford played well for stretches of the match Arizona were simply two much as the went on to a 35-0 victory. The Wildcats will now play Cal Poly who beat UC-Davis 14-12. It was easily the closest match of the round. Cal Poly ran out to a 14-0 lead at halftime. The first try came after some juggling and the second was finished off by a mazy run from the #13. In the second half UC-Davis stormed back with two tries of their own but a missed conversion sunk their chances.

USC took it to pre-tournament favorite Central Washington, even leading 7-0 early. However, Central Washington began to find their groove and went on to win 27-7. Lastly, San Diego State and Santa Clara were the first teams to play in sunshine all day. The Aztecs were the ones in full control as they went on to win 26-0.
