MLR Notes: Sabercats vs. Uruguay, San Diego Legion

A few notes to pass along from Major League Rugby.

San Diego Legion

Not much has been heard from San Diego following their addition to the competition a little while back but this week we learned the identity of the team. They will be called the Legion and will presumably play out of Torero Stadium. They were added to the Major League Rugby website earlier in the week. Beyond that there isn't a lot known on the team.

Houston to play Uruguay

The Houston Sabercats have the most ambitious pre-season schedule of any team in the competition taking on the likes of Seattle, the Vancouver Ravens, the Capital Selects, Chicago Lions, and NYAC. Now you can add the Uruguayan national team to that list. The Sabercats will play the Teros on January 20th. The match will be a warm-up for Uruguay before they take on Canada in World Cup qualifying in Vancouver on January 27th. Houston could be a good spot for these sort of matches in the future as Houston is a taking off point for flights to South America.

 Meetings Held In Houston

The league also held a series of meetings in Houston this last week. Not much is know about what was talked about in the meetings but it's one step closer to the league kick off next year.

NOLA Gold Sign Derrek Van Klein

The Metropolis to NOLA connection continues with prop Derrek Van Klein the latest to make the move. Van Klein has been a stalwart for Metropolis but has also played in the tough BC Premier League for James Bay.

  1. Apparently the meeting was attended by a number of the individuals behind some of the prospective MLR teams for 2019 alongside the likes of the Lions and Blues.

  2. On the one hand, "theme" nicknames are almost always lousy. On the other hand, at least it isn't a leftover from the USFL.
