Hawks Fall Hard To Italy In World Cup

Unfortunately the U.S.A. Hawks have been eliminated from advancing further in the Rugby League World Cup after falling hard to Italy 46-0 in Townsville. It wasn't the result they wanted coming off a similarly lopsided defeat to Fiji in their opener. It doesn't get any easier for the Hawks either as they now have to make the trip to Port Moresby to play Papua New Guinea in their final match. Papua New Guinea are 2-0 and looking quite comfortable. A win would give them a spot in the quarterfinal. That match is scheduled for November 12th.

A lot will be made of the Hawks decision to go with a largely domestic-based side that has looked out matched so far this tournament. Four years ago the team took a squad that included a lot of overseas-based players and made the quarterfinals. However, that wasn't sustainable for the long-term growth of rugby league in the United States. Now the Hawks will know they need to have better warm-up matches for the tournament and to increase their level of play.

  1. Just like in union, we won't compete at that level until we field a team with a large contingent of professional players.
