Rhode Island Defeat Fairfield

Press Release

Rhode Island claimed its first victory in the new Liberty Confefence with a solid 40-15 victory  over Fairfield in Fairfield, CT.  Fairfield caught Rhode Island flat-footed early and scored in the right corner 2 minutes in, but the Rams took control after that, scoring tries twice in 14 minutes from #8 Jack Kelly and wing James Giannone, Ryan Thomas converting both. Rhode Island dominated possession for most of the half, but Fairfield found an opening on the left sideline and broke another try late in the half to close to 14-10, but URI answered with a try from captain Chris Hayes to close the half with URI ahead 19-10.

Rhode Island's forwards took control of the game at the start of the second half, with Kelly slashing through the Fairfield backline for another try 2 minutes in, Thomas converting, for a 26-10 lead. After Fairfield fought back with a try at 50 minutes, senior center Adam Nabb split the defense at midfield and raced to the posts for a try 10 minutes later (Thomas converting again), and 8 minutes after that, the Ram pack put the game away with a pushover try from a set, Kelly dotting down again, and Thomas finished his 5 of 6 kicking day with one final conversion.
Kelly was named Man-of-the-Match.
