New York Officially Petitions For Rugby League Team

According to reports in England a New York group has officially submitted a bit to join the English rugby league system starting in 2019. The move comes after a successful first season for the Toronto Wolfpack. They gained promotion from League One to the Championship. According to the reports the New York side would like to start at the Championship level rather than in League One. Like Toronto, the New York team would have several long home stands followed by long trips abroad. They would also pay for the travel of visiting teams and not take money from the league.

Apparently the New York team has $10 million in secured funding and will play in Red Bull Arena. There could also be a second Canadian team coming online at the same point as well to act as a partner for Toronto. The interest in North America comes as the U.S. and Canada are set to host the World Cup in 2025.

  1. I think this could be good not just for league but for some union players. As is quite a few union players play with league side clubs up and down the east cost during union off season .

  2. While I think Atlanta would be a better choice (they drew mice crowds this season), the NY group has 2 years to build this franchise up. The RFL will approve this I'm sure and hopefully, they can start in the Championship. Toronto playing League 1 was, for the most part, a joke. Not their fault mind you, but Toronto was far too strong to play so many amateur and semi pro sides.
