Hawks Unveil Squad For Rugby League World Cup

The USA Hawks have named a half domestic, half foreign based squad for next month's World Cup in Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea. Several top players from the domestic scene, including Gabe Farley, Hiko Malu, Josh Rice, and Matt Walsh all make the cut. Some of the foreign based players include the Howard brothers Stephen and Daniel, Ryan Burroughs and Joe Eichner from the Toronto Wolfpack, Junior Vaivai, and Mark Offerdahl from the London Broncos. The rise in the number of domestic players is a change from four years ago when the Hawks squad was mostly made up of U.S.-eligible players from England and Australia.

The domestic players on the squad will be coming off a full season of play in the USARL that was won by Malu's Atlanta Rhinos. The USARL 'All Star' match was cancelled due to Hurricane Irma but a mainly domestic Hawks squad did take on and beat Canada quite handily just a few weeks ago.

It's starts on October 28th in Townsville for the Hawks as they play Fiji. They then play Italy on November 5th also in Townsville before finishing out against Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby on November 12th.

The U.S. are in Pool D with Fiji and Italy and play their crossover match against Pool C opponent Papua New Guinea. That's a bit of bad luck considering that PNG are considered one of the favorites to make the quarterfinals. The top two teams from Pool D and Pool C (also has Wales and Ireland) make the quarterfinals. The top three teams from Pool A and Pool B, which contain the likes of big hitters like Australia, England, and New Zealand, make the quarterfinals.
