Midwest Opens DI Play With Favorites Winning

Only a week removed from the Club 7s Nationals the drive for the 2018 Club Championship got underway as the Midwest started league play. Previously the Midwest spread their season out over the fall and the spring with a winter break. However, this year they are switching to fall only which necessitates a early start.

Through at least the first week things pretty much stayed the course to how they were last year. Columbus missed out last year after dominating but this year they look determined. They beat the Chicago Griffins 82-21 led by three tries from Riekert Hattingh and four from Peter Friedmann. Columbus still maintain a group of players that were with the Ohio Aviators in PRO Rugby, including Roland Suniula, Hattingh, and Taylor Howden.

Also in the Midwest, the Chicago Lions beat Milwaukee 59-26. They fell behind early but rallied on the back of a number of players, including College All-American Brady Gent. Additionally, Metropolis beat the Kansas City Blue 42-27 and Palmer won 40-3 over the Cincinnati Wolfhounds.
