Huns Will Not Play In MLR, New Side Forms

Austin is going to have a team in next year's Major League Rugby competition but it's not going to be the Austin Huns. The Huns announced today that the club, Austin Huns Rugby Football Club, has split with what is now called Austin Elite Rugby. It's the Austin Elite Rugby that will be playing in MLR while the Huns will continue to field teams in the Red River Conference as well as playing 7s.

In the announcement a "lack of shared vision for a collective goal" was cited as the reason for the split. However, both entities are still planning on working together on the Nixon Lane Rugby Complex and could share youth outreach and coaching support. While seeing two organizations that were working together stop that partnership is never a good sign Austin Elite Rugby still are a ways ahead of some of their fellow MLR sides in putting together their organization. They should be ready for when the season starts.

The press release from the Huns and the new side is below:
Effective immediately, the Austin Huns Rugby Football Club (HRFC) and the organization formerly known as Huns Rugby Management (HRM) will cease all partnerships in regard to general rugby operations. HRFC will continue to field teams in Men’s USA Rugby XVs Divisions 1,2 and 3 as well as Club 7s and Huns Youth Rugby. The Austin Huns RFC will not be participating in the newly formed Major League Rugby (MLR) conference. The newly branded Elite Rugby Management (formerly HRM) has opted to create its own team/brand, Austin Elite Rugby (AER), and plan to compete in the inaugural season of MLR.

HRFC has experienced some success over the last year of collaboration, including a Men’s Division 1 Championship and expanded social media reach on a national and international level. The two parties have agreed operations should exist independently going forward due to a lack of shared vision for a collective goal. Both HRFC and AER leadership look forward to continued collaboration on maintaining the Nixon Lane Rugby Complex in Austin, Texas, and are in discussions about future cooperation with coaching support and youth outreach.

HRFC is the exclusive owner of the Austin Huns Rugby brand and all intellectual property associated with the brand. All partnerships and sponsorships formed with HRM under the moniker Austin Huns Rugby are welcome to renegotiate with the Austin Huns Rugby Club for the 2017-2018 season by contacting directors@hunsrugby.com.

HRFC would like to wish Austin Elite Rugby the best of luck next season in MLR, especially to Huns alumni continuing with the new organization. The Huns organization- youth, adults, players, and fans- looks forward to its own continued success and traditions in the 2017-2018 USA Rugby Club season in its 45th consecutive year as a competitive rugby club.
