Eagles Advance To RWC Semi-finals

For the first time in nearly two decades the Women Eagles are headed back to the World Cup semi-finals. Even though the team lost to England 47-26 today a crucial late try from Kristen Thomas gave the team a much needed bonus point that would help secure their spots as the best second-place team among the three pools at 11 points. The U.S. did need help elsewhere and they got that as Canada lost to New Zealand 48-5 and Ireland lost to France 21-5. Had either of those teams been able to upset their higher ranked opponent it could have cost the Eagles.

It didn't take England long to get on the board in the match and soon were up 14-0. The last try was particularly painful for the Eagles as Katy Augustyn was shown yellow. England were able to extend their lead to 28-0 before the U.S. scored via Kate Zackary. In the second half the U.S. were able to impose themselves more. It started with great tries from Cheta Emba and Naya Tapper before Thomas finished things off.

The Eagles will now face New Zealand next Tuesday. The match will be shown live on NBCSN at 12:00 p.m. et/9:00 a.m. pt.

  1. The kiwis may not maul as well as the Red Roses, but be prepared for a super physical contest, buoyed by the Maori warrior culture that lurks within.
