Eagles Starters Named To Face Ireland

Head coach John Mitchell has named his team to take on Ireland on Saturday. Severn young players are going to get a chance to play with only two players--AJ MacGinty and John Quill--in the starting line-up having been with the Eagles at the last World Cup. Young players like Ben Tarr, Peter Malcolm, Mike Te'o, and Ben Cima will get a chance to go against a very good team.

Nate Augspurger will captain the side at scrumhalf and will pair with AJ MacGinty who is the fly-half. There was some question whether MacGinty might be slid to #12 to give the Eagles an extra attacking option there but he stays at flyhalf. At that #12 role is Marcel Brache who pairs with Ryan Matyas in the centers. Martin Iosefo and Mike Te'o are the wings with Ben Cima at fullback. Cima played fullback at the ARC and should be relatively comfortable in the position.

In the front-row young Tarr will get a chance to go alongside Chris Baumann. Titi Lamositele probably would have been penciled in as a starter if he hadn't been injured. Peter Malcolm will start at hooker.

The rest of the forwards shakes out pretty much as expected. Nate Brakeley and Nic Civetta are the locks while John Quill and Tony Lamborn are the flankers. Quill is a bit of a surprise but he's been in great form recently. David Tameilau is the No. 8.

The bench has a lot of experience with James Hilterbrand, Joe Taufete'e and Paddy Ryan the front-row replacements. Matt Jensen and Andrew Durutalo are also on the bench. For the backs it's Shaun Davies, Will Magie, and Bryce Campbell.

This line-up should give a lot of young players some experience which is certainly what you want heading into the World Cup but it could also be a line-up that Ireland could exploit. However, with Canada the real main target this prevents some players from getting beaten up too soon.

Forwards: Ben Tarr, Peter Malcolm, Chris Baumann, Nate Brakeley, Nic Civetta, John Quill, Tony Lamborn, David Tameilau

Backs: Nate Augspurger, AJ MacGinty, Martin Iosefo, Marcel Brache, Ryan Matyas, Mike Te'o, Ben Cima

Bench: James Hilterbrand, Joe Taufete'e, Paddy Ryan, Matt Jensen, Andrew Durutalo, Shaun Davies, Will Magie, Bryce Campbell

  1. Why is Hanco Germishuys not in camp? MVP of the recently crowned Austin Huns and clearly an up and coming player. At a minimum he should be in camp as an apprentice.

    1. Looking at who is in camp, I would say the last flanker on the roster was probably Todd Clever. So, while I would be tempted to make that swap with Hanco I don't think Mitchell wants to open that can of worms in his last series with the Eagles.

  2. So what's the line on this game going to be? 60.5? We lost by 68 to New Zealand with an A squad last year, so I'd have to imagine this will not be a close affair.

    1. NZ TAB opened @ 15.5 and now at 20.5 which is reasonable considering Ireland's best players are on the Lions tour.

  3. Where is Al McFarland? Tough, quick, and smart.
