USARL Kicks Off This Weekend

The USARL season is set to kick off this weekend with 12 teams in two conferences along the Eastern Seaboard. After years of turmoil in American rugby league the USARL has emerged as the top competition. Often players who play rugby union during the fall or spring play rugby league in the summer to stay in shape and do something different if they don't want to play 7s.

As mentioned the competition is divided into two conferences. Eight teams play in the North Conference--Boston 13s, Brooklyn Kings, Delaware Black Foxes, New York Knights, Northern Virginia Eagles, Rhode Island Rebellion, Philadelphia Fight, and the White Plains Wombats--and four play in the South Conference--Atlanta Rhinos, Central Florida Warriors, Jacksonville Axemen, and Tampa Mayhem.

Jacksonville has been the traditional powerhouse team, however, they lost to the Philadelphia Fight last year in a close final. This year is similarly expected to be close, especially in the north, where several teams fancy their chances to finish in first place.

The season starts with a full slate of matches this weekend and runs through the end of August including playoffs. With the Hawks, league national team, set to play in the World Cup this year there will also be a North vs. South All-Star game to help select players. The Hawks will then play Jamaica in Jacksonville before playing Canada in Toronto. The World Cup starts in October in Australia.
