South Panthers Fall To Mexico

If the South Panthers are going to be the top team in their pool and advance to the Rugby Americas North Championship match they are going to need some help. The team lost to Mexico 36-29 last Saturday putting them in a situation where they will need Mexico to lose to the Cayman Islands--something very unlikely to happen--in their final round while the Panthers beat Bermuda in order to flip the script. They would also have to have a better point differential. A tall task that likely means theU.S. will miss out on a chance to play either Guyana or Trinidad & Tobago in the final. The U.S. will close out pool play against Bermuda on June 17th in Atlanta.

The Panthers were aggressive early and were rewarded with a try but Mexico soon equalized to make it 7-7. Momentum then swung in the favor of Mexico with a penalty and a try to take a 17-7 lead. The Panthers tried to get back in it with a drop goal but Mexico scored another try to make it 23-10 at halftime. In the second half the teams traded scores with the Panthers even getting the better of Mexico but it was too late.
