Langford 7s: Eagles Successful On Day One

The Eagles enjoyed a successful day one at the Langford 7s going 2-1 and earning a quarterfinal match against Australia. The Eagles did a lot of things well, including beating England and blowing out the Netherlands while also suffering a narrow loss to New Zealand.

Eagles 21-19 England

7s cakes down tow a game of inches and nothing exemplified this more than the Eagles narrow win over England to start out the day. Each team scored three times but the difference came down to the Eagles hitting all of their conversions. All day the team benefitted from the play of players like Jessica Javelet and she helped set up the first try from Kristen Thomas. England struck back to tie the score at 7-7.

England then scored to take a 12-7 but not wanting to be down at halftime it was once again Javelet who combined with Nicole Heavirland to set up Thomas for her second try. At the half it was 14-12 in favor of the Eagles.

In the second half Thomas would get her third try to put the Eagles up 21-12. England made a comeback at the end but due to their early missed conversion they came up short.

Eagles 0-7 New Zealand

With the win over England the Eagles faced their toughest match of the pool against New Zealand. Outside of when the Eagles beat New Zealand in the semi-finals of the Sydney 7s New Zealand have won every tournament so far this year. The closeness between the two teams this year showed early as they each dug in to make the first half scoreless. In the second half New Zealand was able to get a try. The Eagles tried to find the equalizer but couldn't.

Eagles 57-0 Netherlands

To round out the day the U.S. put a punctuation on their efforts with a 57-0 blowout win over the Netherlands. The Eagles domination was straight from the start and stayed through the final whistle. Both Javelet and Naya Tapper had two tries while Nana Fa'avesi, Cheta Emba, Nicole Heavirland, Kate Zackary, and Thomas all had tries.
