Tiger Rugby Expands To Austin, Adds Wannenburg

Press Release

Tiger Rugby is delighted to announce that Austin Huns forwards coach, Pedrie Wannenburg will be joining our team to deliver Tiger Regional programming to Austin and the greater Texas area. Pedrie has a wealth of experience as a player and coach at the highest levels of rugby over a professional career, spanning 15 years. Since his provincial debut in 2001 with the Sharks, Wannenburg went on to become the first Bulls player to garner 100 caps playing in an incredible record 99 consecutive Super Rugby games for the franchise; where he also went on to win three Super Rugby, and five Currie Cup titles.

In between Wannenburg was also selected for the Springboks, winning 20 caps at the international level. In 2010 Wannenburg moved to Ireland, where he played 54 times for Ulster in the Heineken Cup and Pro 12 competitions; before rounding out his career in France. As captain of the Denver Stampede, Pedrie led the team to win  the inaugural Pro Rugby title.

“Pedrie’s incredible career speaks for itself, however we are very selective of who we approach to add to our team of Tiger Rugby coaches. Not only do they have to be great at what they do, but they need to be inspirational and positive on and off of the pitch,” said Tiger Director James Walker. “You only have to ask the Denver Stampede players what Pedrie meant to them last year to get a sense of his character. The Austin Huns are an organization with a fantastic vision, and have made a great decision hiring Pedrie to be a part of their fulltime coaching staff. We would like to give them a huge shout out for allowing him to do work with us.”

“I have been fortunate to be able to play the sport I love. As I transition from playing to coaching, I feel privileged to have the opportunity to work with these two great organizations. The Austin Huns and Tiger Rugby have established themselves as leading programs in the United States, being able to work with both these groups is a great step in advancing my coaching career,” added Wannenburg

Tiger Rugby has grown from a local touring side, to an internationally respected rugby brand with touring teams that cross the globe looking for new places to compete. Over the last 7 years alone Tiger Rugby has competed at the Nelson Mandela Bay 7's in South Africa, Mar Del Plata Argentina, Fiji, Bora Bora Tahiti, Safari 7's Kenya, Shanghai 7's China, Melrose 7's Scotland, Cancun 7's Mexico and Central Coast 7s in Australia. In addition international representative players from USA, New Zealand, Kenya and England come through their ranks.
