Michigan All-Stars Holding Tryouts

Brighton,MI- Legacy Rugby Academy is excited to announce the formation of their Michigan College All-Star program. The Michigan All-Stars will travel to Columbus, OH on May 13th to play a one off match against Ohio College All-Stars at Beekman Field on Ohio State’s campus (though the game could be changed to a larger venue). The squad will be led by Cornel Olivier who is the current head coach for the Traverse City Alliance and former professional and age grade standout for South Africa. He will be assisted by Legacy Rugby Academy Director of Rugby Brandon Sparks and Academy head coach Benny Mateialona.

Coach Cornel Olivier brings a world of experience to Legacy Rugby Academy College All-Stars program. He has been playing since he was six years old in his native country of South Africa where he played at the highest level of collegiate and professional rugby. Upon moving to the states he played several years with the Michigan Men’s Select Side, has been the head coach of the Traverse City Alliance high school program, and started a successful middle school program in the area. "My goal is to develop and prepare young athletes to understand, compete and enjoy the game of rugby on a higher level" said Olivier.

This college All-Star showdown between two states with a storied rivalry came to be when Taylor Howden with Tiger Rugby Academy and Tom Rooney with Ohio State University Rugby reached out to Legacy Rugby Academy Director of Rugby Brandon Sparks. “We are incredibly lucky to find two parties so close to us that share our goal of giving players opportunities to play at a higher level.” says Sparks “The midwest has some real talent in the area and we are excited to give them a platform to showcase it.”

Tryouts for the Legacy Rugby Academy College All-Stars will be April 9th in the dome at the Legacy Center from 4:00-6:30pm. There will be a $15 charge to tryout and interested athletes must be in college or recently graduated from a school in Michigan. If you would like to tryout for this event please register HERE.
