There were a lot of good teams in college rugby this year. There was an elite group of teams made up of the likes of BYU, Cal, Life, and St. Mary's, and then right behind them you have teams like Central Washington, Arkansas State, and Lindenwood. Then you have teams that had great years like UC-Davis and AIC. This was a tough, tough decision to narrow it down to three but we felt that Cal, BYU, and Life are our finalists.
Cal: After falling short to BYU the last couple of years not many people gave Cal much of a chance of beating BYU in Provo. Even in the Varsity Cup final the result seemed in doubt at times. However, Cal showed some of the best resilience we've seen in a long-time to execute a great game plan and pull out the win. They had a lot of players step up in that second half against BYU and were justly rewarded with a win.
BYU: BYU did not win the Varsity Cup but if you look at their year in total it was dominating. Few teams even got close to BYU. St. Mary's got the closest in their match in Moraga but when they met again in Provo BYU crushed them. BYU also won big over Central Washington and Army. There has not been a more dominant team in college rugby over the last five years than BYU.

Life: Life traveled across the country, came up against a team that beat them the two previous years, and still came away with the DI-A championship. That is extremely hard to do. They also had a lot of players step up at the big moment, especially Harley Davidson. Life also was barely touched throughout the year and emerged from the tough Mid-South division without a hitch. You can't asked for much more out of a team.
