ICYMI: ARC To Air On The Rugby Channel, ESPN

Put this in the "in case you missed it" file. The broadcast schedule for the Americas Rugby Championship has been announced. All of the Eagles matches will air live on The Rugby Channel with a replay then airing on ESPN. As of now The Rugby Channel lists the Eagles matches as being under their Premium brand which means fans will either have to pay for the month or pay for the year. They can sign up and get the first month free but considering the tournament lasts two months fans will still have to pay to watch the matches live. No word yet on if the matches on ESPN will be only online or broadcast like they were last year. All other matches not involving the Eagles will be shown live on ESPN3/WatchESPN.

Eagles matches under the pay wall at The Rugby Channel go against the stated objective of the service when it first launched. TRC was touted as being an over-the-top option to give fans more content and statements were made that suggested that it would not be the primary venue for Eagles fans. However, fans now wishing to watch the team live will have to essentially pay for a ticket in the form of a subscription to watch. It's not a very expensive ticket but it's a cost to fans nonetheless. Additionally, having the matches air live on TRC pretty much ensures that only diehard rugby fans will be watching.

  1. Well said. "Additionally, having the matches air live on TRC pretty much ensures that only diehard rugby fans will be watching". When will USA rugby learn.
