Falcons Finish 4th In Uruguay

The Falcons have finished in fourth place at the Punta del Este 7s in Uruguay. The tournament was their first stop on a two leg series that will see them head to Chile for the Vina del Mar Sevens next week. The Falcons finished in fourth after losing to Chile 19-7 in the third/fourth place match. Chile struck first in the match to take a 7-0 lead before the U.S. answered back to level the score at halftime. In the second half Chile ran out two more tries to go on to win the match. Reportedly, restarts played a key part in the result.

To reach the match the Falcons beat Colombia 14-12 in the quarterfinals and then lost to eventual champions Fiji 45-0 in the semi-finals. In the quarterfinals The Falcons scored first before Colombia got a try of their own. The difference was a missed Colombia conversion. The Falcons added a second try as did Colombia but the conversion was the difference.

To get to their match-up with Colombia on day two the Falcons had to get through pool play on day one. First up was hosts Uruguay. The Falcons ran out to a 7-5 lead and then in the second half only added to that to go on and win 26-5. After that came Brazil. The South Americans took a 10-7 lead at halftime but after that the Falcons rebounded to win 17-0. Unfortunately the luck couldn't continue as they ran up against a tough Argentina team and lost 38-0.

Overall as a development team it's hard to complain about a loss to Fiji but they probably would have liked to beat Chile for third place. Still, Chile are an improving team and have high aims this year. Now the team moves to Chile but they will do it without Alex Elkins who was injured at the tournament.
