The St. Mary's Gaels continued their fall portion of their schedule with a two match swing through Southern California over the weekend. First up was the Santa Monica Dolphins. As expected with a pre-season match and with Santa Monica just starting to get ready for their SoCal DI season both teams rotated through a number of players. Santa Monica dominated the outside channels on their way to a 22-12 halftime lead but in the second half the Gaels rebounded to win 44-22.
On Sunday the Gaels took on a group of players looking to make the SoCal Griffins select team. According to Gaels coach Tim O'Brien the match was played on an all-weather surface that made the temp fast. St. Mary's went on to win 37-3. The team finished out their fall season with wins over Chico State, Santa Cruz, and UC-Davis along with participating in a couple of 7s tournaments. The team is back in action at the end of the month against Diablo.
"We had 15 ‘official’ fall rugby gatherings to prepare for the season ahead and though we are thin we’ll be competitive," said O'Brien. "It feels like we accomplished the majority of our fall goals and will now focus on the season ahead. Huge thanks to Santa Monica for hosting, they are a class outfit"
