Cal Cup Week One Preview

There is no time for teams to rest and they get right back at it for week two of the Cal Cup. OMBAC, SFGG, and Life West picked up wins in week one and if they can repeat that this week they will have a good cushion at the top of the table.

OMBAC vs. Belmont Shore (Long Beach State University, 3:00 p.m.)

OMBAC were very, very good in their week one win over Olympic Club. Zach Pangelinan was at the top of his game and the new additions to the team seem to have flawlessly fit in. Their offense is looking like the top in the competition at this point and if Kalei Konrad is on with his boot, as he was last week, then they are so difficult to beat. Additionally, only having to go up the road to Long Beach should have them fresh.

Belmont Shore came back from a 20 point deficit to make things very close against Life West last week. They will be very disappointed that they couldn't finish things out and take the win. They will head into this weekend with a chip on their shoulder. Defensively they did well to hold Life West at times and they are going to need to show some of their traditional tough tackling to get the result. Playing at home always helps.

Olympic Club vs. SFGG (Treasure Island, 1:00 p.m.)

The Bay Area derby between Olympic Club and SFGG is always a favorite. SFGG have had the better of the rivalry over the last several years but they have always been hard fought matches. This go around both teams are playing with arguably some of their strongest line-ups in ages. For SFGG the backs of the Okusi brothers, Pila Huihui, Jack Halalilo, and Volney Rouse is hard to top anywhere in the country. they ran out big winners last week and expect to do the same gain. Their forwards also won't want to miss out and they have a deep bench.

For Olympic Club they have Keegan Engelbrecht back into the line-up. That is a big get for the side that has been knocking on the door of a victory. Engelbrecht's return means Jake Anderson moves to fullback. Former Eagle Will Johnson will also help anchor the front-row. Olympic Club were disappointed with their result last week but now that they have their rhythm it could be a breakout week.

Life West vs. Old Aztecs (Robb Field, 1:30 p.m.)

Life West are still buzzing after win last week but they will have to go on the road to face an Old Aztecs side that now knows what level of play to expect. Life West avoided a potentially costly loss last week against Belmont Shore with the big first half effort. If they find themselves in the same position against the Old Aztecs they could be in trouble. That said, Life West were also in the same boat as the Old Aztecs last week in that it was their first match in elite competition.

The Old Aztecs were competitive against SFGG last week before trailing off. Hopefully they have taken lessons from that result and are ready for this week. Playing at home always helps and you can expect the likes of Pat Blair to provide the team some wisdom ahead of this week.
