Canterbury Red River Interviews: Oklahoma

Our partners Canterbury have conducted a set of interviews with the teams of the Red River Conference.

Tell us about your rugby program? Including a Brief History
OU Rugby has been at OU since 1974. OU has fielded 15 All Americans and 18 USA Eagles. Also, 7 High School All Americans have played their Collegiate rugby at OU. OU Men’s Rugby competes in the USA D1A with participation in the Varsity CUP. We have a Rugby specific Pitch, Clubhouse and access to an Indoor Practice Facility. We are members of the Red River Rugby Conference and are working to grow the game in OK.

Tell us about your rugby programs coaches? Background & time in the role
Doug Neubauer – I played at OU in the 80’s and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Dec. 1987. I was a walk-on wrestler at OU and found my way to Rugby. There I found the sport that fit me best. I was a 3 time All American and represented our Country in 1987 against Holland. I have coached Youth, HS HP programs, Collegiate HP, Men’s Club. As a Coach my teams have been to the National Championships in 7’s and 15’s. My teams won 3 Texas State Championships and I was Texas Youth Coach of the year in 2010.

John “Hoss” Lynd - Hoss” is a former captain of Oklahoma Rugby as a student-athlete and a 1990 All-American. “Hoss” was a Final Four participant with the Dallas Harlequins, a West RFU select-side player, and a USA National Team trialist. He also toured New Zealand and Canada to play all-star rugby.

Andy McMinn - Attended the University of Oklahoma from Aug 78-Dec 82 and from Aug 90-Dec 93; Graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Metallurgical Engineering in Dec 82 and a Master of Science Degree in Materials Engineering in Dec 93. Started playing Rugby for OURFC in Aug 79 and played continuously through approximately Dec 94.

Tulsa Rugby - Player 2007-2009 (3rd at nationals)
OKC Crusaders - 2010-2016 (16th in nation, and D3 MVP)
Toured with OU to England
Current HS Coach for Colts Rugby
Current Oklahoma Select Side Coach

What are your goals & expectations for the season?
Our Goal is to win the RRRC and advance in the Varsity CUP. We plan to keep improving our program to make it one of the best in the Country.

Who are some key players in your program to keep an eye on?
Chris Brumley, Manny Soto, Colton Grantham, Jon Lucas, Robin Persegol.

Who is your biggest rival and / or a must win game in your opinion?
Texas . Then late this Fall we will face Arkansas State. While that is not a must win it will be a sign of where we are in the growth of our program.
