West Coast 7s Loaded With Talent

The first stop in one of the top 7s tournaments in the country takes place this weekend with the West Coast Collegiate 7s drawing in some of the top teams from the West. With many of the teams in the West playing 7s in the fall the tournament has often been used or seen as a final big warm-up before respective conference championships.

Headlining the competition this year are Cal, St. Mary's, UCLA, and Arizona State. Those teams are seeded 1-4 respectively. In Pool 1, Cal will take on Santa Clara and USC. Santa Clara can be a tough out but the Golden Bears should have no problem going 2-0.

Pool 2 is more complex. UC-Davis is mostly known for their 15s program but after back to back championships there shouldn't be any question that have the players to pull off a surprise. The same goes for Grand Canyon University. They may not have the history that UC-Davis or St. Mary's has but they've done a great job recruiting in recent year. St. Mary's will of course be the favorite in the pool, especially with Dylan Audsley in the mix.

UCLA have been able to pull off some surprises in 7s over the last few years and in competition after competition have proven themselves very capable of doing big things. Fans should expect more of the same from the Bruins as they play UC-Santa Barbara and San Diego State. Both of those teams could make some noise but they'll need to be on top of their game.

In Pool 4 it is Arizona State's to lose. They too have had some success in 7s as of late but they aren't upset adverse. Cal Poly can play the spoiler here but they are going to really needed to outperform themselves as a 7s team. Stanford could surprise but traditionally have not been that strong.

This weekend's tournament will take place in San Luis Obispo.
