Six Teams Launch California Cup

Press Release

Six teams from California have announced a new elite domestic competition to commence in December of 2016 and culminate in January of 2017 just before the PRO Rugby and Eagle ARC competitions. The California Cup will have five round robin competitive weekends and a grand finale held at San Francisco Golden Gate’s facility on Treasure Island in San Francisco on January 21st.

The exciting competition features Southern California teams Old Mission Beach Athletic Club, Belmont Shore RFC and The Old Aztecs RFC. Northern California competitors are San Francisco Golden Gate RFC, The Olympic Club, and Life West Rugby. Each club intends to field the best team possible including USA Eagles, domestic professionals and overseas players.

The success of PRO Rugby’s first season and the continuation of a second season played a key role in the formation of the California Cup. The California Cup concludes prior to the start of PRO Rugby preseason and the assemblage of the Eagles squad for the ARC competition. This new structure provides an extended competitive schedule for local players and allows them to showcase their talent for prospective PRO teams and Eagle selection.

“With the Pacific Rugby Premiership clubs deciding to postpone the next PRP competition due to conflicts with the ARC and PRO competitions, four of the California based PRP teams helped organize a December and January competition. That timeframe did not work for Glendale, Denver and Santa Monica so we sought out Life West and The Old Aztecs to join this competition”, says Jason Wood, President and Head Coach of OMBAC. The PRP clubs will meet again in the spring of 2017 to discuss the future of that league.

“Following the 2016 season, it became clear that the winter and spring were over crowded with competitions for our elite level players. The California Cup aims to cure that by holding a short elite amateur competition prior to the ARC, that still allows the clubs to compete in their local competitions following the conclusion of the California Cup,” comments Andrew King, Commissioner for The Olympic Club Rugby Team.

The Cal Cup provides aspiring players the opportunity to play in one of America’s toughest amateur competitions and rugby fans the chance to watch top-level domestic rugby. Round robin games will begin on December 3rd.

The Cal Cup schedule is:

December 3 - Week One

OMBAC at Olympic Club
Belmont at Life West
Old Aztecs at SFGG

December 10 – Week Two

OMBAC at Belmont
Life West at Old Aztecs
Olympic Club at SFGG

December 17 – Week Three

Belmont at Old Aztecs
Life West at Olympic Club

December 24 – Bye Week

December 31 – Bye Week

January 7 – Week Four

Life West at OMBAC
SFGG at Belmont
Olympic Club at Old Aztecs

January 14 – Week Five

Old Aztecs at OMBAC
Olympic Club at Belmont
SFGG at Life West

January 21 – Grande Finals – Treasure Island

  1. And so it goes. But what will happen to the clubs that are not in the Cal Cup? Will the PRP bring in new teams to fill the void? Or are they left to find (or found) another competition?

  2. I think the California Cup is replacing the PRP for the 2016/17 season and then teams will play in their respective D1 competitions.
