CWU Wins NCRC 7s

Press Release

Another year of the NCRC 7’s tournament is in the books after an exciting weekend of rugby in Spokane, WA. As many could have predicted, CWU kept their streak alive as Cup victors for the 8th consecutive year. Their domination was impressive, outscoring their opponents by a nice round 200-0. Not to be outdone, both Gonzaga and WWU brought some fierce competition into their respective pools. Gonzaga racked up 130 points in pool play to go 4-0. Gonzaga faced WWU for a dramatic Cup Semifinal that had both teams tied 7-7 at half. Gonzaga suffered an early red card in the second half, giving WWU just the window they needed to knock out Gonzaga 19-7 and advance to the Cup finals for a rematch against CWU.

BSU turned some heads with some solid competition as they fought their way into the Plate Final against Gonzaga. BSU kept it close in the first half 7-15, but Gonzaga was able to turn it on in the second to win the Plate match 7-29.

UO got off to a rough start in pool play losing to CWU and WWU early, and barely got by a tenacious UI team by a conversion. They pulled it together Sunday morning, handling their last pool match against OSU and knocking out UW in the Bowl Semifinals. EWU had similar success, and faced UO in an intense Bowl Final that extended beyond full-time. EWU managed to hold on to their 14-7 lead and take home some hardware for the first time, despite UO’s impressive final efforts to force overtime.

Both UW and WSU had some heartbreaks in pool play. UW struggled to get their offense going with only 12 points in pool play, all of which came during their win over WSU. WSU had difficulty converting most of their tries, resulting in a few close losses and a tie against BSU. Both teams saw each other again in the close shield final that finished WSU over UW 22-17.

UI finished 9th, though no one would have guessed it after watching their matches this weekend. They performed stronger against CWU and WWU than other pool opponents, and barely lost by a conversion to both UO and OSU. UI was unable to convert in the Bowl Quarterfinal match against UW and lost 19-15. They won their last match of the tournament against OSU 34-5.

OSU suffered some back luck this weekend with a few key players absent, and losing a couple more to injuries early on.
