California Group Takes Over London Welsh

American interest in rugby overseas continues to grow as a Californian group has taken over London Welsh. The club had been in the process of liquidation through the High Court in the United Kingdom and they faced being wound up but the investment from the California group stops that. The takeover must still be approved by the RFU but it's likely to pass and to give stability to the team. It's unclear at this time the identity of the California group but if they have existing ties to the rugby community it would be a major plus for American rugby.

In a statement on the club's website London Welsh Club Chairman, Bleddyn Phillips, stated: “We are thrilled and very excited to be able to announce the arrival of a new owner which will provide the club with the financial strength to sustain its ambition to be not only a competitive rugby team playing in the top tiers of the game in the United Kingdom, but, equally importantly, to consolidate and enhance its social, community and amateur based activities at its spiritual home at Old Deer Park.”
