Hayden Smith Joining Esher

It turns out Hayden Smith is not retiring from rugby after all, just full-time rugby. Smith left Saracens at the end of last season but he'll be joining up with Esher this year. Esher, which has previously had Robbie Shaw on their books, plays in the National League One. It is not uncommon for players in that competition to hold down jobs outside of rugby and that's exactly what Smith is going to do. Some teams have professional players, especially ones that want to gain promotion, like Richmond, but most don't. Smith retired from the Eagles after the World Cup.

Both Derek Lipscomb and Ronnie McLean played in the National League One last year with McLean's Richmond team gaining promotion to the RFU Championship. The list of Americans in England remains the longest of any country. Chris Wyles and Titi Lamositele are at Saracens. Nick Civetta, Paddy Ryan, and David Tameilau will play with Newcastle this year. Thretton Palamo has joined Bristol while AJ MacGinty has done the same with Sale.
