Women Eagles Named For Rio

Women Eagles head coach Richie Walker has named his team for the Rio Olympics and it includes experiences players from the Women's Sevens Series. There aren't any surprises on the roster as each of the players has been a familiar fixture with the team over the last few years. Leading the team into Rio will be veterans Lauren Doyle, Jillion Potter, Vix Folayan and Kelly Griffin. Jessica Javelet and Alev Kelter, both of whom were brought into the program a couple of years ago after playing for the U.S. in other sports, also make the team. Kelter in particular has become a key contributor to the squad as their go-to kicker and an excellent defender.

Rounding out the team are Bui Baravilala, Ryan Carlyle, Nana Fa'avesi, Carmen Farmer, Kathryn Johnson, and Richelle Stephens. All of the players have significant experience on the Women's Sevens Series that includes several trips to finals.

"It is an exciting time for USA Rugby and I am very honored to name the first USA Women's Sevens rugby team to compete in the Olympics," said Walker in a U.S.A. Rugby press release. "Most of the players that I have selected have a considerable amount of experience. Every player has played on the Sevens World Series and some players have played 15s for the USA, as well."

"There has been a significant acceleration in work-rate, efficiency, and execution over the last couple of months," said USA Rugby High Performance Director Alex Magleby in the same release. "Richie and staff have brought a lot of clarity and connectedness to camp. We can't wait for the team to finally be rewarded with the opportunity to perform to our potential on this stage."

The Women Eagles begin their tournament on August 6th. They will head to Florida for a camp before leaving for Rio on July 29th.
