PRO Rugby POTW, Standings, & Scoring Leaders

Photo: Connie Hatfield
It's time once again to check in on the PRO Rugby standings, attendance, and scoring leaders while naming a player of the week.

Player of the Week: Langilangi Haupeakui

Any coach will tell you that if you give a player an opportunity to step up and play at a higher level they can either wilt or they can take off an become even better. It's very clear that after playing for the Eagles only a few weeks ago that Langilangi Haupeakui is the latter. Haupeakui was an absolute beast against San Francisco over the weekend. When Sacramento needed some energy and tries early it was Haupeakui that delivered. He is playing with a lot of confidence right now and it's leading to a lot of good things, especially on the defensive end. If he continues to play at this level you can expect more call-ups. Also, a mention goes out to Spike Davis who also had a nice weekend.

Standings

Ohio have now opened up a six point lead in the standings but it comes with the caveat that Denver have two matches in hand. The Aviators only have two matches left. That means if they take away the maximum points, which includes a match against Denver, they can finish with 47 points. Assuming Denver, who have played eight matches, win three of their last four with the full points, then they will finish on 46 points. Ohio's nine bonus points are giving them a great shot to claim the title even with three losses. Elsewhere in the table San Diego are firmly in third while Sacramento boosted their chance of not finishing at the bottom of the table with their win over San Francisco.

Ohio sit at the top of the table thanks to a big +186 point differential. To put things in perspective they have only given up 217 points all year. They have scored 403 points with the next closest team (San Diego) having only 259.

Attendance

Once again this comes with the usual disclaimer that these are our best guesses and not actual numbers. It wasn't a great weekend attendance wise for the league. Having matches on the Sunday of a three day week and the day before the actual holiday was never going to be good and it showed. Plus, the threat of rain in Ohio helped keep people away. The overall league attendance--again, according to our unofficial numbers--is now around 1750. Sacramento and Denver, the two highest draws in the league, still have three and two matches at home respectively.

Scoring Leaders

Kurt Morath did have the best day from the tee for San Diego on Sunday but he did add to his league leading total. He's still the only player with over 100 points. San Francisco's Volney Rouse is the closest with 90 points and he'll top the 100 point barrier soon. Will Magie is still third followed by Shaun Davies and Mirco Bergamasco. Spike Davis is the top non-kicker on the list.
