Harlequins Set For U.S. Visit

Press Release

Harlequins rugby club, one of England’s top professional rugby union teams, has today confirmed that it will travel to San Francisco, California, this week to prepare for the 2016/17 Aviva Premiership season.

Widely recognised across the globe due to its eight affiliates clubs in Dallas, Pretoria, Melbourne, Hobart, Hamilton, Kenya, Kolkata and Abu Dhabi, Harlequins is one of the six oldest rugby clubs in England and will use the tour to San Francisco to kick-off its 150th anniversary season.

Arriving on Saturday 30th July and departing eight days later, the 54 man squad, containing 16 international players, will capitalise on the strategic partnership set up with USA Rugby last year by helping to expand and develop the game within San Francisco and the Bay Area communities.

The Harlequins team will train at the San Francisco Golden Gate Rugby Club, Treasure Island and the Club would like to invite members of the US media to interview the Harlequins coaches and players from 14:00 Tuesday 1st August and Thursday 4thAugust, before watching an open training session.

Capitalising on the rising interest in the sport, Harlequins has arranged a number of events to engage the local community in the sport, its values and benefits, and as opportunities to introduce some of the Club’s unique personalities. Members of the media are welcome to attend all community activities.

Commenting on the tour, Harlequins Academy and Global Development Director, Tony Diprose said: “We are incredibly excited about travelling to San Francisco later this week. This trip provides the squad with the ability to prepare for our 150th season in a completely new environment.

“Most importantly though, it provides Harlequins the platform to expand its name, and the game of rugby, to a captive audience which we hope will grow participation and awareness in sport’s biggest market.”
