Men's DII & DIII Playoff Update


Seven of the eight quarterfinal spots in the men's DII and DIII playoffs have been filled. Here is how things stack up.

DII

West Regional

The Sacramento Capitals beat the Portland Pigs 64-17 to claim the Pacific North championship. They will play the Tempe Old Devils, who once again have won the Pacific South. The Old Devils beat Huntington Beach 44-5. Tempe have been one of the best DII teams in the country the last few years and are one of the favorites to make the final.

The other side of the regional will see the Frontier winner, the Provo Steelers, against the Red River winner, the Little Rock Stormers. The Steelers began the weekend with a 34-27 win over the Omaha Goats before beating Boulder 43-24. Boulder had beaten the St. Louis Bombers 43-29. Little Rock beat the Austin Blacks 36-9 and then Houston United 43-25. Houston United beat the Dallas Reds 25-13 the day before.

East Regional

In the East the Detroit Tradesmen booked their spot with a 52-11 win over the South Side Irish. They will play Charlotte who sealed their spot a few weeks back as the South winner. The other side of the East bracket will be the Village Lions who beat the Mystic Barbarians 37-19.

The Lions will play the winner of the Mid-Atlantic. That competition is down to the Richmond Lions and Wilmington. Richmond beat Old Gaelic 59-22 and Wilmington edged Philadelphia Whitemarsh 22-20.

DIII

West Regional

Napa Valley's big season continues with a 28-24 win over the 43rd State Crimson Lions for the DIII Pacific North crown. Napa will play the Orange County Ravens, the winner from the Pacific South. The Ravens beat the Northern Arizona Landsharks 58-22. Both Napa Valley and Orange County are considered favorites to make the final.

The winner of the Napa Valley-Orange County match will take on either the St. Louis Royals or the Euless Texans. The Royals beat the Denver Highlanders 34-26 in the Frontier final. They previous beat the defending champion Wichita Barbarians 32-5 while the Highlanders beat the Columbia Outlaws 32-5. The Texans beat the Austin Blacks 40-5 in the Red River final.

East Regional

The Savannah Shamrocks were the first to book their place as the South winner a few weeks back. They will play the Bremer County Bucks. The Bucks beat the Grand Rapids Gazelles 39-22.

The other quarterfinal will see the Fairfield Yankess play the winner of the Mid-Atlantic. Fairfield beat MIT 45-7. In the Mid-Atlantic Reading and Newport News will square off while the Washington Renegades will play Rocky Gorge.
