Mateialona To Lead Legacy Academy Summer 7s

Brighton, MI- Legacy Rugby Academy is pleased to announce they have appointed Benny Mateialona as associate head coach of their men and women’s Summer 7s program.

Coach Benny Mateialona brings strong experience of rugby and exercise science. He previously held the title of Head Coach for Michigan State University’s men’s program and has done some work for the Nike Rugby Camps. Currently he serves as head strength and conditioning coaching for several local high school programs.

“We have hired a great coach and mentor for the players,” said Director of Rugby Brandon Sparks. “Benny will bring a high standard of rugby to the academy as well as an expertise on what it physically takes to play at an elite level.”

Before coaching, Mateialona played rugby for Life University and progressed through the USA men’s pathway. While at Life he lead the running eagles to two national championships, while playing scrum-half, and earning himself All-American honors. From there he played with the USA selects from 2010-2013 which allowed him to experience the game at an international level.

When asked what his goals and expectations were for joining the Legacy Rugby Academy Mateialona said “I want to see Rugby Union grow in the state of Michigan, help develop athletes to achieve their goals” he added, “I also want to continue to develop myself as a coach, the better I am, as a coach, the better the players.”

Coach Mateialona first duty will be to help run the skills session and tryout being held this Sunday from 9am-11am at the Legacy Center in Brighton, MI. All men and women players in the state of Michigan are welcome to attend. For more information please contact Brandon Sparks:
