Evening Notes: Varsity Cup Final Venue, PRP Rescheduling, Tracking Camps

A few notes to pass along to you this evening.

Varsity Cup Final Location Confirmed

The Varsity Cup has confirmed the location of their final with the title match being held at BYU's South Field on May 7th. It's a bit of a change from what was expected and messaged earlier that Rio Tinto Stadium, just about 30 minutes north of Provo, would host the final. The stadium has hosted the final the last two years. However, MLS side Real Salt Lake, the owners of the stadium, have decided to re-sod the field during their long upcoming road trip. As a result the final will move to BYU's campus where the first final was held. The final will still be aired on NBCSN.

United World Sports Exec VP Dan Lyle said in a press release, “Our colleagues at Rio Tinto Stadium let us know that based upon a scheduled gap in their season and their needs that they had to resod their stadium in May; they made it absolutely clear that they want us back in 2017. Not wanting to lose the momentum of growing the event in Utah, we have secured South Field at BYU, which will be packed to the max with close to 6,000 fans. We are pleased to be working with Brigham Young University and are looking forward to the final.”

PRP Matches Rescheduled

Ohio were able to make it to Denver but they were one of the lucky ones over the weekend. A big snow storm in Colorado cancelled most of the flights into Denver International Airport, including the flights from Olympic Club and SFGG who were to play Denver and Glendale respectively in the PRP. The SFGG-Glendale match in particular is important because it has direct implications for who might make the Grand Final.

Today the league announced the make-up dates for both matches. SFGG will travel to Glendale on May 7th, a week before the final. Glendale will almost certainly be in at that point. SFGG will now see their big match against OMBAC in a few weeks be the ultimate decider. The Olympic Club-Denver match doesn't have an impact in on who makes the Grand Final and so that match will be played the same day as the Grand Final on May 14th.

National Tracking Camp Dates & Locations

The dates and locations for upcoming National Tracking Camps have been confirmed. Not only have these camps identified the likes of Matai Leuta and Ahmad Harjly, both of whom have gone on to play for the Eagles 7s, but also several players that found their way into PRO Rugby.

Sunday, May 1: Dayton, OH
Sunday, May 1: Henrietta, NY
Sunday, May 8: University of San Francisco
Saturday, May 14th: UC Irvine
May 20th or 21st: Allen, TX
