DI-AA Playoffs Set, Big Battles Looming

The DI-AA playoffs are set with several top matches upcoming. As things stand now, it looks like UC-Davis could be defending their title against powerhouse AIC who are favored to come out of the East.

The West

The West regional is down to seven teams. In California, UC-Davis, the top team in the Pacific West, will host Gold Coast Conference number two USC. UC-Davis have had an excellent season in the Pac West and have faced a lot of tough teams along the way. Plus, they have the experience of knowing what it takes to make the final.

The other match in the region sees Gold Coast winner Long Beach State take on Pac West number two Sacramento State. Long Beach State have been the top side in the Gold Coast since the beginning but have yet to break through.

In the other match out West in the preliminary round Washington will host Utah State. The Huskies finished second in the standing during the regular season with their only loss coming to Western Washington earlier in the month. After beating Washington State in the playoffs they then exacted revenge against Vikings 18-13 in Bellingham. The Huskies are well coaches and having won the DI-AA tournament that ran alongside the Varsity Cup a couple of years ago they have experience going far. Utah State played in the final of last year's same tournament falling to Utah Valley.

Whoever wins this match will play Arkansas, who earned a bye to the quarterfinals.

The East

As mentioned, AIC are the favorites in the East. They are going to gain a very tough test from Delaware. AIC once again won the East Coast Conference while Delaware is back playing rugby after a suspension. They are rebuilding their program but have had some decent results this year.

The winners of AIC-Delware will play the winner of Harvard vs. James Madison. Harvard won the Ivy Conference play-in match against Princeton last weekend. Dartmouth won the regular season but opted to play in the Varsity Cup where they beat Penn State last weekend. James Madison are a tough side that could be a dark horse in the competition.

On the other side of the bracket, Notre Dame College will play MAC winner Bowling Green State. Both sides have had postseason success in the past. Notre Dame College has some great athletes on the team and should probably be favored. That said, Bowling Green are well coached.

Whoever wins that match will be play Middle Tennessee State University. They beat Florida International for the SIRC Championship.
