BYU, Cal Yet Again In Varsity Cup Final

Central Washington came close to crashing a Cal-BYU Varsity Cup final but in the end they were edged out by the Golden Bears. Instead, Cal and BYU will now play in Provo on May 7th for the fourth straight year in the tournament final. BYU has won all three finals to date.

Cal 14-13 Central Washington

As mentioned, CWU came within a couple of points of upsetting Cal. Central Washington have had a stop and go season as they went to an independent schedule this year so even though they have built a strong program it was somewhat unknown how they might play against a team like Cal. They answered off those questions with a very solid result despite the loss. For Cal, it was a job done even if it wasn't pretty at times. It also gave them a warning that they need to step it up as they face BYU in two weeks.

Take the jump to read more. The match was intense with both sides playing good rugby at times. It took a quarter of the match before Ian Wright scored a try for Central Washington to open the scoring. Cal would respond with two tries in four minutes beginning with Patrick Barrientes in the 28th minute and Russell Webb in the 32nd minute. Each team had opportunities to score but either mistakes or missed kicks kept it at 14-7 at the half. Reuben Ludick added a couple of penalties for CWU in the second half and had a chance to win it at the end but Ludick's kick was wide left.

BYU 68-20 Arkansas State

It was thought that Arkansas State might be able to do what CWU had done to Cal to BYU. While it was semi-close early on BYU exerted their dominance once again. There have to be questions asked whether this is the greatest run by a college team of all time. Every time BYU has been given a challenger not only have they responded but they've done so with big wins.
