Navy Bests Penn State

By Tim Bintrim

In a hard fought match contested at The Brigade Sports Complex of the US Naval Academy, the Midshipmen held off the visiting Nittany Lions of Penn State to prevail 24 to 20. The well-attended crowd was treated to an entertaining game that featured a successful final assault by the Penn State offense after time had expired that closed the scoring gap. The Navy side is always in superior physical condition and today was no exception as their stronger forward pack controlled the scrummages.

The Nittany Lions saw most of their success in finding the gaps in the Midshipmens' defense for some break-away gains. Their new coach, capped Eagle, and former Utah star, Blake Burdett also seems to have been working on developing their passing skills as they were able to move the ball quickly with some success. These are 2 young teams to watch in the future as Navy has lost 28 Seniors from last season's team and Penn State reportedly lost 13 experienced players recently.

Photographer Mimi Goodman was at the match and took some great photos. See those after the jump.
