Sydney 7s: England Beats Eagles, U.S. To Play New Zealand

Having already secured a place in the Cup quarterfinals the Eagles entered their match against England with a chance to top the pool. Unfortunately it didn't work out for them in a controversial 17-14 loss. They will next play New Zealand in the Cup quarterfinals at 7:35 p.m. et/4:35 p.m. pt.

England were the first on the board when they ran simple play to spring Alex Gray for the try only two minutes in. If that wasn't enough for the Eagles they also lost Martin Iosefo, who has been massive on the day, to an injury during the sequence. It's unclear if he'll be able to return.

Not wanting to make this a repeat of last week in Wellington the Eagles fought back and nearly had a try a few minutes later. With a move started by Barrett the ball was eventually put out to Perry Baker on the wing a few meters out. However, when in the try zone he put is foot into touch erasing the would be try.

The Eagles were able to regain possession on the restart and were on the attack again. When Danny Barrett was the subject of a non-called high tackle the ball spilled loose killing any momentum. Eventually England were able to get the ball back and increase their lead to 12-0.

Zack Test was able to get the U.S. on the board just before the half. Perry Baker put in an amazing run that went through the hands of Barrett into the streaking Test for the score. At the half England led 12-5.

An errant pass to start the second half gave England another opportunity that they wouldn't miss. A missed pass found Folau Niua isolated allowing England to steal the ball and go in for the score and a 17-5 lead. The Eagles did fight back through keeping possession and finding Barrett for the score to climb within three.

As the match neared it's end the Eagles kept pushing but a missed knock-on on England and instead a penalty called on the U.S. allowed England to take roughly a minute off the clock to finish out the match.

Starters: Barrett, Test, Holder, Iosefo, Niua, Hughes, Baker
